Show Compassion Foundation

Claire Grace, founder of Show Compassion Foundation, will join us to talk about their mission to educate people through public speaking and promotion regarding how to be compassionate and inclusive of anyone that is different than ourselves, and to implement the "SEE, STOP, START" program into elementary schools across Oklahoma and eventually the nation. Claire is a teenager with passion. She is a two time recipient of the President's Volunteer Service Award, a Prudential Spirit of Community State Distinguished Finalist, and the youngest ever Oklahoma NextGen Under 30 Award recipient. Claire received the National Youth Activist Award in the Inspiring Arts category for using music to teach a social concept. As an accomplished performer, she received the Veronica Bocelli Distinguished Artist Award presented by Kristin Chenoweth. Aside from her role as Founder, she also holds a statewide office as President of Special Olympics Oklahoma's Youth Activation Committee and is the Major Events Director for Stillwater Makes a Change. School Board Candidate Forum - Wards 4 & 5

Our meeting this week will start a little earlier than normal in order to accommodate a candidate forum with four candidates. Ward 4 school board member Dustin Reavis and challenger Melody Wright, along with Ashley Moore and Steve Hallgren, candidates for the open board of education ward 5 seat, will participate in the forum. State Question 814 forum

State Question 814, which has been proposed by the state legislature, will be on the November 3 ballot. If approved, the allocation of the tobacco settlement funds received by the state and deposited in the Tobacco Settlement Endowment Trust (TSET) would be significantly reduced and would be redirected to the Tobacco Settlement Fund, which is appropriated by the legislature. The purpose of the redirected funds is the matching dollars for Medicaid expansion mandated by SQ802 this past June. Rep. John Talley will present the pro argument and Rep. State Question 805 forum

State Question 805, the Criminal History in Sentencing and Sentence Modification Initiative, will appear on the November 3 ballot. If passed, the initiative would prohibit an individual's past felony convictions from being used to justify lengthening or otherwise harshening sentencing in subsequent non-violent felonies. It would also provide for sentencing modifications for eligible individuals serving or set to serve sentences that were enhanced based on past felony convictions. Former Oklahoma Speaker of the House Kris Steele will present the "pro" argument and Payne and Logan County District Attorney Laura Austin Thomas will present the "con" argument.
